Tolerance
Hold my hand
then judge me
Or better Feel my sameness,
Look me in the eye then tell me I don't matter
Or better See I am you,
Sit at my dinner table
Sharing food and conversation
then tell me I'm not worthy
Or better Understand my hunger is like yours,
Take a walk with me
then hate where I live
Or better Understand my plight,
Watch my children play
and tell me they are expendable
Or better Love them as your own,
As I hold your hand
Look in your eyes
Eat at your table
Walk with you
Understand your plight
And watch your children play
I know
I want to be better too
Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding. — Albert Einstein
Genevieve - I love the poem that you included here. To me it really is about not being judgemental of other people, especially when you have no idea what it is like to walk in their shoes. When I clicked on the link, I also saw the "coexist" image that I often see on bumper stickers. I love that image. I am not a bumper sticker person, but if I were I would totally have that one. It is a reminder that there is room for everyone's beliefs. (Laura G.)
Genevieve--I also love this poem that you put here. I have never heard it before and it just captures so much of what we have been talking about in this course. I also, like Laura, love that bumper sticker! Friends of mine have it on their bumper and I've always loved it. Wonderful vision board! Jan
Genevieve--Love this poem and the picture you used to represent key points. I agree with Jan, your poem captures cultural competency at its best. Faye. J.
